Fish farming. Thaur
Natural and unique fish farm!
Nikolaus Medgyesy has been running the fish farm in Thaur since 2016. A truly sustainable showcase project, where the Danube-born original trout, which was extinct in Tyrol, is being reproduced again. Thaur fish farming also has an interesting historical background dating back to 1504, when it was first mentioned in writing in Emperor Maximilian's fishing book.
The original trout: Tyrolean cultural asset
The "original trout" is the name given to the native (autochthonous) and almost extinct Danube brown trout that has been present in our region since the last ice age.
This gave rise to the idea of saving these endangered fish, breeding them, finding out more about their characteristics and reintroducing them to suitable waters in their catchment area. In agreement with the head of the Department of Zoology at the University of Innsbruck, Nikolaus was allowed to use the university facilities to reproduce these fish. After the successful reproduction, a seven-year Interreg project TroutExamInvest was realized in Tyrol, Salzburg, Carinthia and South Tyrol on his initiative.
Fresh enjoyment directly from the farm
Within 4 years, the edible fish mature into fish of the highest quality under the most natural conditions in constantly cold spring water. Brown trout, lake trout, tiger trout, Alsatian char and Arctic char offer a wonderful sustainable alternative to the usual mass-produced fish from other countries.
