Salt. The white gold
Salt was mined in Hall in Tirol and the wild and romantic Halltal valley for over 700 years. The town of Hall was blessed with wealth as a result. The brine was transported from the mountain to the valley and boiled in the salt works area. The mine was shut down in 1967 and the salt was forgotten. You can find out more about mining in Halltal at the Hall in Tirol Mining Museum.
Salt is one of the oldest foods known to mankind and was once highly valued. So much so that it was referred to as "white gold" and was used as a means of payment. Salt was extremely important for the production of cheese and the preservation of food.
This companie from the Hall-Wattens region have revived this former tradition:

Care is taken to ensure that the high-quality raw materials are prepared gently and sustainably. The ingredients that refine the valuable food are essential oils or herbs. Both come from local organic cultivation.
You can choose from a total of three different products: handmade Alpine salt, Swiss stone pine salt and Alpine fleur de sel.
The products can be purchased at the tourist office.
