Wattens. In Tyrol
Wattens is characterized by a large family of entrepreneurs like almost no other place in Austria: When you think of Wattens, you think of Swarovski. Every year, millions of guests from all over the world visit the chambers of wonder in the Swarovski Crystal Worlds created by André Heller, which whisk you away into a wonderful universe of cut crystals.
Wattens also offers other worthwhile excursion destinations: there is also the only typewriter museum in Austria. More than 450 fully functional typewriters from the Jörg Thien collection are on display in a modern setting. They cover the period from 1884 to the present day and offer interesting insights into the history of typewriter development. Visitors can get an idea of how they work by means of cutaway models.
The very young Museum Wattens (since October 2018) brings together the history of Wattens and sees itself as a cultural powerhouse. It provides unique insights into the development of the municipality, which has less than ten thousand inhabitants. A settlement history dating back to the Iron Age and a (pre-)industrial tradition dating back to the Middle Ages have left their mark on Wattens. Today, the internationality that went hand in hand with Swarovski's worldwide success is mixed in with these traces. Decades of work and the archaeological finds of the Wattens-Volders Museum Association and the scientific work of the museum team form the foundation of the museum. The permanent exhibition grows with the location and the laboratory is open for visitors to explore Wattens.
The Himmelreich open-air museum rounds off the offer. The site has also been awarded the title of a place of power in the Hall-Wattens region. If you stand in front of the excavations of a settlement from prehistoric times in Wattener Himmelreich and then let your gaze wander over Wattens, the most inspiring thoughts come to mind: you can imagine how people lived more than 2000 years ago, how advanced they were and how ingeniously they had laid out their village. It was inhabited from the 4th to the 1st century BC and was destroyed by fire. The open-air museum in Himmelreich is freely accessible at all times.
If you are traveling by bike, you can hardly miss Wattens - the famous Inn cycle path from Innsbruck to Passau leads directly through the village.
There is a fixed date in Wattens in summer for all young and old fairytale fans: At the Tyrolean Fairytale Dream Worlds, Kasermandl, the Saligen Fräulein and many other legendary figures come to life in the mystical fairytale forest
